Sir:
I am informed that you have unlawfully procured a "deed of Trust" from Henderson Harris of certain Stock and Crops and that you now propose to seize the property by order of this illegal document. You will report to this Office before taking any further action and show proper claim to the property in question, otherwise I shall protect this man in his legal rights:- if this order is disregarded, you will subject yourself to arrest.

Inclosed you have affidavit of Capt. Lee sheriff, and formerly Claim Agent that this acknowledges the debt to Ransom and he woes the Sheriff $2.- borrowed money.  These men always try to get rid of their debts soon as their papers are transferred to other Officers.  I have no doubt the debts above referred to are just ones and should be deducted.  When settled please send checks for amount to me and I will return proper receipts for same.

Sir:-
This old man Charles Jeffers complains that Westin King has taken his crop of corn away from him. there has been several complaints against this man King of similar purport.  You will please take this case in hand and see that King is made aware that there is some redress for these old colored men, and if such complaints are again made to me I shall report to the Governor that you are unable or incompetent to protect these people in their lawful rights
