“Sig’l” is abbreviation for “Signal”.
Hove too – stopped the ship with the head into the wind.
Courses – The course is the lowermost sail on a mast.
The word "Communication" was broken over two lines -- "Commun:
ication". The two vertical dots seem to be used like we use a hyphen today to break a word.
