Transcription Notes:
" marks in the K and F columns do not mean ditto. Rather, they seem to mean that a reading could not be taken (i.e. too slow or too deep to measure). We can see that when the weather is calm (no wind) the ship often has no speed (K = "). From instructions: IF YOU FIND A WORD YOU CAN’T QUITE READ - Please make a note using double brackets [[ ]] like this: [[good guess?]] or simply [[?]]. S.b.E. - South by East W'r - Weather Mod'te - Moderate Mid't - Midnight Et - East D’o - Ditto - same as before Vble -Variable Hove too – stopped the ship with the head into the wind. Wore - changed the tack of a sailing vessel by coming about so that the wind passed astern. It looks like longitude was calculated two ways at noon on the 29th. DR probably means Dead Reckoning (plotting the new position based on previous days courses and speeds). Not sure what the other method was ... need to check nearby pages for clues?
