Dearest Girl,

I have just finished lunch. I sat at the table with two men and I don't know what they must have thought of me because I was thinking so hard about you that I ate in a very mechanical way and stared straight ahead all the time as if I was in a dream. I miss you enough in New York but when I am in Newburgh it is terrible not to see you and feel that you are hundreds of miles away. It hardly seems possible. When I was talking to Homer the other night I would see every once and a while a little expression about his face that reminded me of you. I would watch so closely and sometimes it would be around the mouth and then the eyes and it all went to make me feel lonely
