pulled out a pistol from his boot leg and putting it against his head, told him to run. This he did, as fast as he could go. They however pursued him about a quarter of a mile, and in coming up with him, they again beat him still more severely, and ended by again making him run off, as before, with the threat that if they ever heard any more of the affair, they would be sure to kill him.

When I saw this man on the 17th he bore every mark of having been terribly used. As he had not been to a Magistrate, I immediately sent him to Mr. H. D. Moore, J.P. On the 21st he returned when I learned that Moore had written out a warrant not yet served, to have the offenders go before the Court to meet in October next. I, at once sent him back with a letter to Mr Moore, requesting him to bind over the parties to appear for trial before the District Court, which would meet here on the 27th, and further to also suitably recognize the party, who had possession of the pistol to appear for trial by Military Commission, at whatever time, and place Bvt Col. J. R. Edie, Comdg. Mil. Post at Laurensville might direct. As yet these parties have not been arrested. Although I have understood they have lately been seen in the neighborhood of their home, where it is supposed they still are, the Constable to whom the warrant for their arrest was directed states that they cannot
