December 27, 1956 Dear Mr. Richardson: In the true spirit of the holiday season, your kind letter of December 21st brought to Mrs. Seligman and to me the most agreeable news of your decision to publish our article on the Chantilly portraits. Let me assure you that it gives us indeed a great deal of satisfaction and pleasure. Though the article as you have it has already been greatly condensed, I realize fully that it is a long one, and you will have noticed that in order to reduce further the number of pages, we have made ample use of footnotes. I note that you expect to publish is sometime in 1957, and may I in this connection ask whether it would be possible to have a dozen reprints, as we would like to send a copy to each of the different parties who have been so very helpful. This brings to my mind a topic about which I would like to have your opinion - The Prince Raoul de Broglie of the Musee Conde (Chantilly) has not as yet had cognizance of our final conclusions, and I intend of course to send him a copy of the article as it now stands, apprising him too of the fact that it will be published in the Art Quarterly. These small portraits having never been truly studied, I am wondering whether the Musee Conde could not be interested in having for sale a number of copies of this article. From my experience of the limited funds available to museums in France, I doubt if they would be in a position to purchase outright these copies. Thus my question, before I write to Prince de Broglie, is whether you would conceive of having a number of copies printed up for the Musee Conde, and if it would be in keeping with the magazine's principles to consign for sale such copies to the museum. As I said above, this is a thought that occurred to me since I received your good lines, and I would only submit it to Prince de Broglie as such, not knowing whether in turn the museum's rulings would not militate against such a procedure. Do let me have your views on this subject. With renewed thanks and all good wishes for the New Year, and with best regards, Sincerely yours, Germain Seligman Mr. Edgar P.
