377 July 23rd Sir Thomas Colby (freedman) states that his father Henry Colby, living on a plantation in the District of Double Branches in the county of Lincoln eight miles from the town of Lincolnton, was shot at on the night of the 13th inst by certain unknown parties. These shots, some 4 or 5 in number were fired into the house about 11 o'Clock at night, and it was impossible at the time to ascertain with any certainty who were the perpetrators of the outrage. It is supposed herein to have been the work of two individuals who were the associates of a robber and outlaw who was killed upon the plantation of Henry Cobb sometime in the month of May last, and who were several times overheard charging Mr Cobb with the murder of their associate & threatening him with his life - This is the second case of outrage attempted upon the person & property of Henry Cobb, a previous attempt having been made to take his life a few days after the murder of the person
