Mr. John C. Rainer, Chairman
1954 Program Committee N.C.A.I.
Towoac, Colorado

Dear Mr. Rainer,

This will have reference to your letter dated June 17, 1954, in regard to program planning for this years annual Convention.

During my recent visit with Mrs. Helen Peterson at Nashville, Tenn. I was given to understand that you and her have already worked out a full progress which will be submitted to the full Committee for approval, which, I think is proper procedure.

Mrs. Peterson also stated that the afternoon of the second day has been reserved for Buffalo Barbecue and general free for all Indian day. Which I am to be in full charge as Chairman.

At later time you will be properly advised as to reasons why I feel that I should assume full charge of this portion of the program.

Otherwise, I feel that your suggestion in your letter and report of Mrs. Peterson seems to be in very good order.

Theme "Whats in Future for the Indian" seems O.K. too.

I feel that the keynote speaker should be free from any taint of "Bureacrats" or have allegiance to any organisation other than N.C.A.I.
Speakers subject should revolve around, "What is in future for the Indian or Indians".

Mrs. Peterson reports that you have Indian Bureau employee at Area office in Southwest on your mind to have this role.

I have been thinking of my choice on the men in following order.
1. Frances McKinley, Tribal Employee
2. Benjamin Reifel, Bureau Employee
3. Van Delorie, Minister

At any rate this is my answer to you letter

Sincerely I am,
Martin Cross
