glomeration of Indian beliefs lumped with the Christian notion that a messiah would come and deliver the Indian from his white oppressor and that the coming was to be soon. It also suggested nonviolence as the reaction to the white man. This is very curious given the fact that Wounded Knee was fought to suppress this faith.

The selections on the Wild West Shows are chiefly of interest in what they say about the callousness of the state, after having robbed these people of their land and cruelly suppressing their very existence it would turn around and begin to exploit the Indian for all he was worth as a commercial enterprise. Bad Heart Bull speaks in some detail about the corruption of old customs in order to make them more pleasing to the audience. People were not so interested in seeing the richness of a strange culture as they were in seeing the half-naked bodies of screaming young Indians in a pathetic mockery of once great battles.

This book is worth the reading by those with a sincere wish to discover history too long suppressed. It is also a book with extreme relevance for today. The final plate depicts a party of Indian braves hunting deer. They have forgotten to get permission from the sheriff. The sheriff was a man with an abiding faith in "Law and Order." On a fall day in 1903 several Indians died for lack of a hunting license and in the interest of "Law and Order." On a fall day in 1972 two young black men were killed at Southern University, their "crime" was not known but we are assured that the sheriff and his deputies did it in the interest of "Law and Order."
