the whites in the welfare of the Freedmen. They never in any instance have brought their distresses to my knowledge unless it was for the purpose of getting them away from their farms or neighborhood. I endeavor to disabuse my mind of the strong language, barbarous and disgusting in its character, which I am often compelled to listen too, and would believe if I could that they were but the opinions of individuals, but when a whole community quietly acquiese I am constrained to think that they are all alike 

I would respectfully represent to you that I cannot properly discharge the duties devolving upon me as Asst Superintendent of the 4th Dis Va- without the assistance of one or two men to assist me in making arrests and to protect the authority of the U.S. from insult. For myself I am an individual and care little. For the Uniform which I declare I have heretofore worn with Honor, I care much.
